This is a gloomy palace.
Surrounding the palace is chaotic darkness, devoid of any hint of light. Yet within the palace, dim illumination manages to survive. It is as dull as the ancient oil lamps, sputtering within decrepit crypts, shedding their reluctant light upon lifeless bodies.
Through the dim flicker, one can discern the architecture of the palace is incredibly antiquated, reminiscent of edifices from the era when the light had not yet reached, a time of chaos. Vines crisscross haphazardly, conjuring images of writhing maggots in a sinful world. The walls are plastered with mottled markings, as though smeared by pulverized brain matter — pallid, feeble, and steeped in decay.
Although this palace, standing defiantly amidst the chaotic darkness, gives off an aura of antiquity, shadows cast upon the walls by the dim lamps reveal that it is far from being deserted as its façade would suggest.
Shadows ebb and flow, creating a shadowy spectacle of light and dark.
Numerous demons traverse in and out of the palace. They vanish sporadically, only to reappear shortly after.
When they depart, the demons hold nothing in their hands. But upon their return, they cradle metallic vessels. Inside these diverse vessels seethes a scalding, boiling blood.
The aura emanating from this blood is so intense that it appears to distort the surrounding space.
A petite Phantom Demon materializes outside the palace, holding a metal platter encrusted with emerald. The platter bears the unmistakable handiwork of the native inhabitants before the Godfall Age.
The Phantom Demon seems to cherish the platter dearly. Not only does it hold it carefully in its hands, but its slender tail is also wrapped around the base of the platter, seemingly terrified of dropping it.
Clutching the platter protectively, the Phantom Demon flutters its wings and flies directly into the palace.
The inside of the palace mirrors the outside in terms of aesthetics — it is as ancient and primitive as its exterior, devoid of any decorations or divisions. The only elements that break the monotony are corridors for passage and a spacious hall.
The Phantom Demon’s destination lies within this hall.
Or more precisely, it is headed towards the gigantic blood pool situated in the middle of the hall.
Hundreds of demons, each holding diverse metallic vessels, pour blood from their containers into the blood pool. Once emptied, they depart with their vessels, only to return later for a refill.
This is the Phantom Demon’s second visit to the blood pool, and it still finds the sight stunning.
The nearly tangible aura of bloody energy slows the Phantom Demon’s pace, as it attempts to slyly absorb some of the energy.
As it tiptoes towards the blood pool, it slowly pours the blood from its vessel into the pool, hoping to linger near the pool for a bit longer.
But just then, a terrifying voice pierces its ears, “You, stop right there.”
The Phantom Demon is startled. Raising its head, it sees two massive blood cocoons floating above the blood pool, from which demons were absorbing the bloody energy. Nearby, a demon, whose skull resembled a salamander’s, was glaring at it with eyes as big as bronze bells.
Its heart abruptly kicked up a notch in tempo, could it be that Master Komodo had discerned its covert blood absorption?
Previously it observed numerous demons slyly siphoning from the blood pool, so why was it singled out? Could this be a classic case of killing the chicken to scare the monkey?
The Phantom Demon trembled with fear, and just as it was about to kneel before Komodo, the latter intervened once again: “Tell me, what is the state of the outside world?”
“The outside world? I…we… we’re still entangled with humans, obstructing their progress to the Void Obelisk. Our efforts are fairly effective…” Relief washed over the Phantom Demon as it realized it was not being punished. Its words flowed smoothly until Komodo interjected.
“Who asked you for that! I’m asking you, how is the Shadow Mist Zone faring?” Komodo sounded irate.
“The situation in the Shadow Mist Zone has improved too!”
“Improved? Explain in detail.” Komodo’s tone lightened slightly. Despite its dislike for Nythotep, it had to admit that her effectiveness was unparalleled among the seven seats.
“The Shadow Mist Zone has vanished, everything appears to be in order now…” The Phantom Demon quickly recounted all that it had witnessed.
But with each passing word, Komodo’s frown deepened.
The Shadow Mist Zone had vanished? Did that mean the defense mechanism had been disabled? If that were the case, it was indeed good news. However, a sense of unease continued to linger in Komodo’s heart.
Its sudden interrogation of the Phantom Demon was an attempt to dispel its inner turmoil. But upon hearing the full report, its discomfort only amplified.
A new possibility struck it.
Apart from being deactivated, there was another situation in which the defense mechanism of the Void Obelisk could disappear——
That is, if it had been destroyed!
With this realization, Komodo felt its heart hammering. It swiftly transformed into a flame silhouette, flying out of the dark hall, seemingly inspecting La Sutherland through some means.
After Komodo’s departure, the Phantom Demon felt a slight ease. Its response should have been satisfactory, right? Maybe it was time for some rewards… like lingering around the blood pool a bit longer to absorb some blood essence?
With this thought, the demon’s eyes lit up, and it quietly stationed itself by the blood pool. It absorbed the blood essence while covertly examining the surroundings of the hall.
This place was the Blood Pool Hall, an alternate dimensional space within La Sutherland that had been in existence since ancient times. Beneath the blood pool lay an altar dedicated to the Crowned Clown, capable of invoking healing powers by sacrificing demon blood.
The hall was vast and empty, devoid of any notable attractions. The Phantom Demon eventually fixated its gaze upon two blood cocoons suspended above the blood pool.
It knew that housed within those cocoons were Eudecernos and Minotaur. It had heard about their fierce battles with humans and how they had sustained critical injuries, now striving to recover.
The reason demons traveled back and forth was to gather the blood of deceased demons for La Sutherland and pour it into the blood pool to save these two Great Demons.
“Humanity can actually bombard the strongest demons down to half their bodies. They are truly powerful. Indeed, I made the right choice to work in the Demon Blood Pool. If I tried to intercept them, I might have been finished,” the Phantom Demon was self-satisfied at heart. A familiar demon once told it not to choose the Demon Blood Pool, claiming Komodo was the most temperamental, and it might just get burned.
Now it seems, that guy was simply a coward.
When the Phantom Demon was secretly ridiculing in its heart, it did not consider the fact that it was almost scared out of its wits previously.
While it was full of self-congratulations, a low hush from outside emerged, “Master Komodo has returned!”
The Phantom Demon turned around naturally and did indeed see Komodo flying in from outside the hall… However, suddenly, the Phantom Demon’s expression changed. Fear flashed in its eyes, for it noticed that Komodo was staring at it with ferocious eyes. With a flick of its hand, a flame flew out from its palm, heading straight towards the Phantom Demon.
With Komodo’s terrifying pressure, the Phantom Demon could not move at all, and naturally, it couldn’t avoid this strike.
As the flames began to scorch its body, it faintly heard a shout from the Phantom Demon’s mouth, “You deceived me, you dare deceive me!”
When the Phantom Demon’s body fell into the blood pool in a ball of fire, the words of the demon who advised it echoed in its mind: You were right… Komodo is truly capricious… I shouldn’t have chosen to come here…
After the Phantom Demon fell into the blood pool, only a few white bubbles emerged from the boiling blood, and then all was quiet.
Komodo floated above the blood pool, the bottom of its eyes flaming red.
The other demons around were startled and did not dare to move, looking at the terrifying figure shivering.
Komodo fell into contemplation. Seeing La Sutherland did not improve, it even began to question itself: “Could I have been mistaken?”
As Komodo was contemplating its self-doubt, a new demon in the hall said, “Huh, why are you all not moving… That’s right, there’s a white light flashing in the chaos outside. Does anyone know what it is?”
Komodo’s ears perked up, its gaze passed through the aged hall, looking at the chaos outside.
This place is La Sutherland’s alternate dimension space, a relatively stable alternate dimension space. It shares the same spatial coordinates as La Sutherland, but due to certain powers, it’s attached to La Sutherland. To use a wizard’s terminology, it’s very similar to the sub-plane.
Although it can’t be seen in La Sutherland, creatures sensitive to space can feel its existence.
Because it is attached to La Sutherland, once La Sutherland undergoes a change, there will be corresponding changes here as well.
Komodo also saw the “white light” that the previous demon was raving about in the chaos. However, Komodo recognized it at a glance, this isn’t any light, it’s a deadly shadow of death!
Because, that’s a spatial rift caused by collapsing space!
Furthermore, the entire Blood Pool Hall is surrounded by these spatial rifts!
Though the rifts are still far from the Palace of the Blood Pools, Komodo clearly sees that these spatial rifts are expanding incessantly. Soon enough, they will envelop the Blood Pool Hall, utterly annihilating it and reducing it to dust lost within the chaos. At that point, this alternate dimension space will vanish too.
When Komodo grasps this, clarity fills its mind.
Even this alternate dimension space is showing signs of impending doom; surely, La Sutherland must be doomed too!
“Some wretched being has destroyed the master node runes of the Void Obelisk!” Komodo snarls in fury, “As I expected, leaving that dim-witted glutton in charge of the Obelisk was a colossal blunder!”
Komodo roars a few times, venting its rage.
Yet, very swiftly, Komodo gathers its composure. Like Iadase, upon acknowledging the fall of La Sutherland, it realizes it’s futile to blame anyone and it’s impossible to stem this tide of calamity.
Being a demon, selfishness comes naturally to him, and Komodo is no exception. Its current contemplation is, given La Sutherland’s inevitable downfall, how can it maximize its gains amidst this disaster?
With the Void Obelisk gone, it no longer fears the threats from Giallar. When the Source Fire is exposed, it will undoubtedly try to seize it. However, the wounds inflicted by Winchester have yet to heal, and vying against Olucia seems a tad beyond its reach.
It must find a way to recuperate.
But how can it recover quickly? Komodo’s gaze slowly shifts from the blood pool towards the demons present.
With a malicious grin, he says, “The fresh blood of a demon is far more potent than that of the deceased.”
Amidst the astonished looks from the demons, Komodo lifts his hands, summoning swirling flames…
After a while, the Blood Pool Hall is thoroughly emptied, every demon pushed into the blood pool by Komodo, alive. The blood essence emitted by the pool grows even stronger.
Having absorbed all the blood essence, Komodo finally recovers completely after a long sigh of relief.
Despite his recovery, Komodo remains dissatisfied. His current power is still inadequate to compete against Olucia, and it would be better if he could grow stronger.
Pondering this, a sly smirk creeps upon Komodo’s face as he looks at the two blood cocoons floating in mid-air.
“Now that La Sutherland is destined to crumble, you no longer have any value in living. Why not help me fulfill my wish?”
