Moments later, Gloria and Sanders gradually awaken from the illusion of the Shadow of the Cage.
Unlike Sparrow Blossom and Popoca, they didn’t obsessively question Angel about the ultimate disappearance at the end; instead, they quietly pondered.
Gloria had previously experienced several illusions crafted by Angel. This included the illusion contained within her feather earrings, a trinket Angel had enchanted for her to reminisce about Toby. She also possessed the “Dream Twins,” which enabled her to create the genesis spell; the Dream Twins certainly played a significant role in this.
However, the Dream Twins feather earrings were different in their presentation compared to the current Shadow of the Cage.
The former offered a sort of exploratory freedom, like an epiphany inspired by the landscapes they encountered. Moreover, there was a subtle aura of the Nightmare Plane within these illusions, compelling one to immerse oneself deeply, contemplating the hidden narratives behind each element.
The Shadow of the Cage was different; it was a straightforward illusion without any undertones of the Nightmare Plane. Moreover, it told an intriguing story through rapid shifts within the illusion.
This cinematic experience limited the scope of movement within the illusion, while driving forward changes in the illusion based on the unfolding of the story. While it didn’t offer as much freedom for exploration as the Dream Twins feather earrings did, it highlighted the narrative itself.
In short, the Dream Twins feather earrings invite you to fill in the gaps with your imagination — you aren’t even sure if you’re guessing correctly. The Shadow of the Cage, on the other hand, bluntly narrates its story.
To draw an analogy, the former is like stream-of-consciousness prose, while the latter is a straightforward storytelling.
Gloria personally preferred the Dream Twins feather earrings.
This doesn’t mean that Gloria didn’t appreciate the Shadow of the Cage’s mode of illusion presentation. She simply felt that although the story within the Shadow of the Cage was intriguing, it didn’t touch her heart, and many aspects remained unexplained. If the story were different, it might be more captivating.
This is Gloria’s perspective.
Unlike Sanders, Gloria focuses on the story itself, while Sanders is more attentive to Angel’s use of the illusionary realm.
Angel’s mastery of the illusionary realm is quite adept, especially considering that the Shadow of the Cage he created serves to tell the story. This storytelling employs numerous shifts within the illusionary realm.
Sanders was quite surprised to find that these abrupt changes in the illusionary realm did not make him uncomfortable at all.
The level of immersion with the illusionary realm has reached an unconscious stage.
Moreover, each transition within the illusionary realm that Angel sets up is quite intriguing. For example, in the scene transitioning from a church to a riverside, instead of directly jumping to the discovery of a severed head of the knight, the focus is initially on rapidly alternating horse hooves, flying dirt, and the knights’ cries serving as background noise. Only when the knights arrive at the riverside does the illusionary realm gradually expand the scene, allowing the viewers to explore freely.
Although this scene-switching might seem limited, it actually helps people engage more deeply in the story’s pacing.
Throughout the entire illusionary realm, Angel avoided using Nightmare illusions. Sanders understands Angel’s intention; the purpose of creating the illusionary realm is to express the entire story. The appearance of Nightmare illusions would distract viewers and ultimately overshadow the main subject.
Even without the use of Nightmare illusions, the fact that even Sanders could immerse himself and overlook the background of the illusionary realm, demonstrates Angel’s control over illusionary spells.
One could even say that Angel is showing off his skills through this illusionary realm.
After watching, all that remained in Sanders’ mind was admiration for the seamless integration of the illusionary realm and the deep satisfaction from the story itself.
“Well done,” Sanders graciously complimented.
With a triumphant smile, Angel felt vindicated. Not too long ago, Sanders had teased him about his aesthetic choices in urban planning and naming. Now, Angel felt he had regained some ground in the realm of artistic aesthetics.
Gloria also offered some praise: “It’s really quite remarkable, a delightful and innovative stage play. However, personally, I prefer fairytale narratives, much like the Cat Bus you created in ‘Dream Twins’. That vibe really resonates with me. If you ever adapt a widely known fairytale like —The Bloody Princess of the Dark Corpse Forest—, I would even be willing to buy a ticket to see it.”
A widely known fairytale? —The Bloody Princess of the Dark Corpse Forest—? Angel wondered if there was a conceptual gap between him and Gloria about what a fairytale should be.
“If the opportunity arises,” Angel replied, masking his unfamiliarity with —The Bloody Princess of the Dark Corpse Forest— with a smile and changing the subject.
“Speaking of which, the play is good, but what’s the point?” Gloria curiously inquired.
In other words, Angel had them watch this play for some reason, right?
“No particular reason, just that it’s been a while since I practiced alchemy. I thought I’d also sharpen my skills at creating illusions,” Angel replied. Though he didn’t reveal his true motive, it wasn’t a lie either. “However, this story is based on true events.”
Gloria, who had been puzzled by the first half of Angel’s statement, felt that his practicing alchemy and illusion skills made sense; after all, he had recently advanced and needed an adjustment period.
However, upon hearing the second half of Angel’s statement, she frowned: “A true story? Are there places in the Southern Region where such cages exist?”
Angel responded with a counter-question: “Do you think this story took place in the Southern Region?”
Reflecting on the illusionary world she had just experienced, Gloria said, “It should be the Southern Region. The accent of that Alex character seemed familiar.”
Gloria was lost in thought.
At that moment, Sanders chimed in: “The accent leans more towards the Stone Mulberry Dynasty, specifically the dialect of the Thirteenth An Province.”
Gloria nodded thoughtfully, “Indeed, there’s a hint of that region’s accent, but it’s been slightly modified, likely blended with dialects from other places.”
In Angel’s mind, the wheels were turning rapidly. If Alex’s accent was reminiscent of the Stone Mulberry Dynasty, did that mean he was from there or had perhaps lived there before?
The Stone Mulberry Dynasty was located in the eastern part of the expansive Vast Continent. Sanders had once visited a wizard market, the Steampunk Theme Park, specifically to find a rune-scroll that would increase Angel’s luck. This particular market was situated in the Stone Mulberry Dynasty’s Seventh Province.
“However,” Sanders noted, “while Alex’s accent leans toward the Stone Mulberry Dynasty, the other residents of Ghust Town don’t share that accent. I’ve never heard theirs before.”
Gloria agreed, “Their accents are definitely odd and unfamiliar. I’ve traveled far and wide, even venturing into other worlds with my Barbie Restaurant, but I’ve never encountered accents like these.”
Neither Gloria nor Sanders recognized these accents. Given the lack of information on the geography and environment, determining Ghust Town’s precise location remained elusive.
Still, given that Alex’s accent contained shades of the Stone Mulberry Dynasty, Angel personally believed that this ‘cage,’ as he saw it, might be somewhere in the Southern Region.
Gloria pondered for a while but ultimately turned to Angel, “If you say this is a true story, then you should know, right?”
Angel shrugged, “I don’t know.”
Upon hearing this, Gloria couldn’t help but roll her eyes, “If even the creator doesn’t know, then why are you asking me?!”
“Let’s go. We’re leaving tomorrow, so I should start packing and let Felicia know.”
Losing interest in further discussion, Gloria turned and walked away.
After Gloria had left, Sanders looked at Angel and said, “Whatever your reason for creating this Shadow of the Cage, the overall performance of this illusionary realm is truly commendable.”
Sanders patted Angel on the shoulder, “If you have any doubts next time, feel free to ask directly, no need to beat around the bush.”
With that, Sanders turned and went back to his study.
Angel sat on the sofa, caressing Toby’s soft feathers, and thought to himself: He didn’t want to be evasive either, but the special energy within the Gateway of Fantasy was closely related to the Heavenly Eye.
The spatial displacement ability of the Gateway of Fantasy could be revealed, as the Wizarding World itself has similar powers. But what consequences would there be if the special energy were exposed?
Furthermore, the secrets of the Gateway of Fantasy have not yet been unraveled. What’s at the end of this peculiar passage? To be on the safe side, he still needs to be cautious.
…
The next day, when Angel entered the quiet room, he found that Sparrow Blossom was gone, leaving only Popoca.
“I let my sister leave first,” Popoca said softly, “The sorrow of parting is best kept within one’s heart.”
“Are we leaving?” Popoca smiled, “Let’s go.”
Although Popoca was smiling, the sadness in his eyes was evident to anyone.
For Popoca, this separation was more than just a farewell; it was a permanent parting.
He was unaware of what Sparrow Blossom had asked Angel to do, so one can only imagine how sentimental he was feeling.
“Nothing in this world is absolute,” Angel softly said, “Perhaps one day, you and your sister will indeed have a chance to reunite.”
“… Thank you,” Popoca simply thought Angel was comforting him. What he didn’t know was that, in Angel’s view, this was not empty talk.
In the foreseeable future, this statement would eventually become a reality.
