Chapter 1568 Monster in the Mist <TOC> Chapter 1570 New Powers

Although Angel could employ green runes for self-protection, he had prepared several defensive scrolls as a precaution. Moreover, these were not the ordinary scrolls he had given to the control group earlier; rather, he was using high-rank scrolls.
These premium scrolls were extracted from Sanders’ prized collection. After all, the wear and tear of these scrolls in the Wilderness of Dreams had no bearing on reality.
Most crucially, Angel was currently the only one capable of utilizing these high-rank scrolls within the Wilderness of Dreams. The activation of these scrolls required energy, which none of the others had in sufficient amounts to manipulate.
After making all the necessary preparations, Angel unrolled one of the scrolls——a high-rank defensive spell. Instantly, an ethereal shield materialized around him. This shield was colorless, yet it seemed conspicuously out of place, distorting the surrounding air in a way easily noticeable to the naked eye.
“Be cautious once you’re in there,” Sanders advised.
Acknowledging Sanders with a nod, Angel strode forward without looking back, eventually being engulfed entirely by the roiling black mist.
Upon entering the black mist, Angel felt as if he had stepped into a dark pond, a pond filled not with water but some form of mysterious energy.
He extended his hand, attempting to capture this enigmatic force but failed. However, in this process, he sensed that the energy was ubiquitous, permeating the entire span of the black mist as naturally as air.
Calming his mind, he carefully attuned himself to it.
He could not pinpoint the exact nature of the energy, but there was an implicit sense of gloom and negativity.
It felt unfamiliar yet strangely recognizable at the same time.
As Angel focused his senses, the surrounding black mist began to shift and transform. Similar to what he had observed in the control group earlier, the dense black mist churned and rolled, eventually coalescing into various strange monsters.
These monsters had bizarre appearances. Some had skulls that resembled those of some demonic entities, but beneath the skull, their bodies were gaseous. Others were covered in a slime, as if they had just emerged from a stagnant swamp. And yet others looked like conglomerates of numerous fleshy growths, akin to something out of a science-fiction horror.
Upon their manifestation, these eerie monsters immediately launched frenzied attacks on Angel.
Their methods of attack varied: some rushed forward to engage in hand-to-hand combat, while others stood at a distance, hurling some sort of strange long-range attacks.
Angel did not evade; a variety of distinct energy attacks struck the protective shield around him.
As the energy made contact with the shield, it shattered into myriad particles and dispersed in the dark mist. Angel could sense that these energies resembled negative energies, replete with dry coldness, manic restlessness, and a powerful desire to devour everything. They all induced uncomfortable negative emotions, but their essence differed somewhat from typical negative energy.
Moreover, Angel watched a mass of fleshy growths — the science-fiction horror — launching a brutal close-range attack on him from point-blank range.
The impact was substantial, not only visually but also palpable through the vibrations of the shield. It was clear that this aberration was physically real.
But weren’t all these monsters initially composed of dark mist?
Even more monsters were taking shape, and Angel couldn’t help but observe this transformative process. At first, he didn’t notice anything; but then, a monster materialized right next to him. He focused all his attention on it, and at the very moment it took form, Angel felt a familiar ripple.
“This is…” Angel seemed to have realized something. Relying on his advanced defense spells, he stood ponderously at the epicenter of these monsters, lost in thought.
By the time Angel snapped back to reality, nearly thirty monsters had surrounded him. However, their power wasn’t yet sufficient to break his advanced defense spells.
Still, it was evident that the monsters materializing later were significantly stronger than those that appeared initially. If he continued to stay in this dark mist, even advanced defense spells might struggle to hold up.
After previous contemplation, Angel had essentially reached a decision in his mind: he planned to withdraw from the dark mist.
However, before retreating, he intended to accomplish one more thing.
…
Sanders gazed at the dark mist blanketing the distant wilderness, his expression serene, as if lost in thought.
By contrast, Freud, who was standing next to him, was far from calm. Freud paced anxiously outside the dark mist. Although Angel had confirmed that the monsters inside it were probably not invaders from another realm, Freud still considered the possibility that they might be beings from the Dream Realm.
After all, although the Wilderness of Dreams wasn’t the true Dream Realm, it had come into existence supported by that same realm.
If the beings inside were indeed monsters of the Dream Realm, then caution and vigilance were called for.
As Freud grew increasingly restless, something suddenly was thrown out of the distant dark mist.
With a muffled grunt, a shadowy figure landed before Freud.
Upon closer examination, Freud realized it was one of the two people who had entered the dark mist as a control group. As Freud bent down to check the individual’s condition, he saw the person’s mouth wide open, and a dark shadow scurried out of it.
Before Freud could react, he felt a sudden loss of weight, and his vision blurred momentarily.
Regaining his composure, he found Sanders had moved behind him at some point. Sanders had pulled him aside when the dark shadow emerged from the person’s mouth, saving him from the tragedy of being struck head-on by it.
Feeling a sense of relief, Freud thanked Sanders. Sanders, however, remained silent and turned his gaze to the distance.
Following Sanders’ gaze, Freud saw that the dark shadow, which had emerged from the person’s mouth earlier, had already sprinted back into the dark mist and ultimately vanished from sight.
“What was that?” Freud couldn’t help but ask.
“It could be something that has possessed him…” Sanders paused, seemingly choosing his words carefully, “A mist monster, perhaps?”
While they were discussing, a second person was also thrown out.
It was another individual from the control group.
This time, Freud learned his lesson and didn’t approach. Instead, he observed from a distance. Not long after this person emerged from the dark mist, he opened his mouth, and a dark shadow darted out, eventually merging back into the mist.
Freud noticed that this shadow appeared to have the contours of a living entity.
Perhaps, just as Sanders suggested… it was the mist monster that had previously possessed them.
After the shadow escaped, both individuals fell into a state of unconsciousness. Freud and Sanders did not attend to them but continued to focus their gaze on the dark mist.
Soon after, a disturbance appeared within the mist, and Angel emerged, carrying an unconscious man in his hand.
Since the two people from the control group had already come out, there was no doubt that the man Angel was carrying must be Lietz’s brother.
Angel dropped Lietz’s brother to the ground and was about to share his findings in the dark mist, but he noticed that both Sanders and Freud were intently watching Lietz’s brother, as if waiting for something.
“What’s going on?” Angel asked, puzzled.
Freud briefly explained the previous events, and after listening, Angel seemed taken aback: “So the monsters that possessed them have escaped?”
Freud nodded: “Yes.”
Angel frowned, puzzled. He had brought these three people out with the intention of studying the entities that had possessed them, only for those beings to escape. What was there left to investigate?
Just as Angel was steeped in regret, Sanders suddenly spoke up: “Something’s off. Lietz’s younger brother doesn’t seem to have expelled the mist monster from his body.”
…
Half an hour later, at the pinnacle of Azure Tower in Initial Heart City.
“Both individuals in the control group are temporarily detained in the dungeon. One of them has already regained consciousness and seems mentally coherent, although he’s lost memories of being possessed. The other is still unconscious, but we assume his condition will mirror the first,” Freud reported. “For now, only Lietz’s younger brother is the anomaly; the mist-like monster within him has not departed.”
Freud then turned his gaze to a glass chamber on the other side.
This chamber, originally a research tool for tissue repair or physical preservation, was now being used to confine Sharu.
Sharu was Lietz’s younger brother.
Sharu had awakened once before, but upon regaining consciousness, he was entirely feral — growling and behaving as though mad.
Not only that, but Sharu’s body had also mutated: spines had sprouted from his back, and his limbs had undergone various transformations.
To prevent Sharu from causing harm, Angel had brought the glass chamber from reality to confine him.
“Sharu is different from the other two. He spent a long time in the dark mist, so the monster inhabiting him might have fully integrated with his being. That could explain these changes,” Sanders said as he studied Sharu inside the chamber, a flash of inquisitiveness in his eyes. “It’s a shame. If this were reality, we could attempt a detailed study.”
In the Wilderness of Dreams, although one could bring tools from the outside world, insufficient personal strength made comprehensive research difficult.
“If we had the means to control energy in the Wilderness of Dreams, perhaps then we could investigate,” lamented Sanders.
“It’s not entirely out of the question,” Angel suddenly interjected, drawing everyone’s attention to him.
As Sanders waited for Angel to offer a solution, he changed the subject: “Let me share what I discovered in the dark mist.”
