Angel looked at Gloria with suspicion.
Gloria had seldom discussed the Novastar Competition except for personally attending the first round of its revival. And her attendance was merely to find out about Angel’s nickname.
Since when did Gloria develop an interest in the Novastar Competition?
With this question in mind, Angel took a seat, intrigued to hear what Shirley had to say that had captivated Gloria’s attention.
In front of Angel, Shirley seemed a bit constrained. However, as she delved into the topic of the Novastar Competition, her formality slowly melted away, replaced by a thick air of resentment.
Her dissatisfaction stemmed from the fact that the match she spoke of was the one she had lost. Angel remembered seeing in an internal message on his communicator that Shirley had lost to a competitor named Azaz.
As Shirley recounted her story, Angel began to understand why Shirley was discontent and why Gloria found it so intriguing.
Azaz’s nickname was the “Demon Gourmet,” a title that already provided a hint of his character. Indeed, Azaz was an apprentice in the gourmet arts.
It’s a general consensus within the Wizarding World that gourmet wizards are relatively weaker in combat capabilities compared to others in their field. However, the supportive roles they play are so valuable that they sometimes even outshine potion-making alchemists. This has led people to look down on their combat skills while still lusting after their utility. This was evident when a problem occurred with Gloria last time; the staff at her Barbie Restaurant either dispersed or were kidnapped.
For a gourmet wizard, often perceived as feeble, to have made it this far is nothing short of astonishing!
With the Novastar Competition’s finals fast approaching, how could this not be a subject of wonder?
As a paragon in the gourmet arts, Gloria was naturally curious about this Azaz.
Shirley’s defeat to a gourmet apprentice was, undoubtedly, a source of discontent for her.
After Shirley recounted her grievances and frustrations about the competition that she suspected would haunt her for a considerable time, Gloria lapsed into contemplation.
A moment later, Gloria snapped back to reality: “Actually, two competitors from the gourmet sector have made it to the top sixteen this time. As for the ‘Cuisine of Spirits,’ Sunisha, I am familiar with her. She has inherited an exceptional gourmet lineage and even took advanced training at the Candy House. Unfortunately, she lost to Trom who has been practicing in the Abyss since childhood.”
“As for this Azaz, it’s the first time I’m hearing about him.”
The Candy House is a sanctuary for gourmet arts in the Southern Region and a refuge for gourmet wizards. Even if a gourmet wizard doesn’t belong to the Candy House, they would still come to study there for specific gourmet spells or recipes, much like Sunisha did.
Being one of the leaders of the Candy House, Gloria is nearly aware of every gourmet wizard who has trained there — even if it’s just an apprentice. Yet, curiously, she had never heard of this Azaz.
An apprentice in gourmet arts who never trained at the Candy House, yet managed to advance to the top sixteen in the Novastar Competition, and even defeated a hot favorite like Shirley——how could this not pique Gloria’s interest?
“I wonder where he popped up from… There really are some dark horses in this Novastar Competition. Since he hasn’t studied at the Candy House, he might be like Sunisha — a gourmet apprentice with an inherited lineage,” Gloria mused. “I’m somewhat curious about his background.”
“Shirley, do you know when Azaz has his next match?” Gloria inquired of Shirley.
Shirley hesitated for a moment: “I think he has a match today… because the quarter-finals are being held today with four matches in succession. Since he’s in the quarter-finals, he’s sure to compete, but I want to clarify that I’m not really interested in him.”
A sly smile appeared on Gloria’s face: “True indifference never needs to be verbalized.”
Seeing Shirley’s reluctance, Gloria continued, “However, it’s only natural for you to be interested in him since you were defeated by him.”
With a subtle snap of her fingers, a phantom began to rise slowly in front of Gloria, eventually transforming into a metallic puppet.
“Just so happens, I purchased an alchemical puppet from a magic doll shop a few days ago. I’ll send it to check when Azaz has his match today,” Gloria said.
However, before Gloria could issue a command to the alchemical puppet, Angel’s voice reached her ears.
“Today, the Demon Gourmet’s opponent is… the Divine Dress Maiden.”
Confused, Gloria turned her head towards Angel, only to see him engrossed in reading something from a thin light sheet.
“Ah, I almost forgot. You’re a special guest judge this time. Is this inside information from the Infinite Battle Tower?” Gloria quickly realized. “Is Azaz actually going up against the heir of the Shepherd God family?”
Shaking his head, Gloria commented, “It seems his luck isn’t that great. It’s incredibly difficult to defeat Carvelyn, especially with her Shepherd God Garment’s support. Even the Son of the Ocean, Jiebo, would have a hard time beating her.”
“So, when do they start the match? Even if he loses, it doesn’t matter; I just want to gauge Azaz’s capabilities,” Gloria inquired of Angel.
As Gloria looked at Angel, she noticed a strange expression on his face as Angel stared at his communicator.
“What’s going on?” Gloria asked, puzzled.
Shirley also shifted her gaze to Angel, equally curious.
Angel took a moment to collect himself, then let out a deep breath and turned to Gloria: “Before I answer your question, I need to correct a misconception you have.”
A misconception? Question marks filled Gloria’s mind.
“Winning over Carvelyn isn’t easy for Jiebo, the Son of the Ocean. But what if he never faces Carvelyn at all?”
Angel paused, then slowly said under their puzzled gazes, “Jiebo lost.”
Gloria was momentarily taken aback, finding the outcome rather unexpected. Having weathered many storms and witnessed countless inexplicable events, she was only surprised and puzzled.
Shirley, however, was genuinely shocked. Her eyes widened, and she covered her mouth, exclaiming in disbelief, “Jiebo lost? How could that be?” The Son of the Ocean, Jiebo, had once held his own against formal wizards despite being an apprentice. He was also the most outstanding disciple of the Sea God. How could he lose in the Novastar Competition?
Angel nodded, “He indeed lost… to Hilary.”
Angel had predicted when he saw Hilary and Jiebo grouped up that they would inevitably face each other. But little did he expect, they met in the very first round.
Angel believed that Jiebo certainly had the capability to strive for the pinnacle of the Novastar Competition. The caveat was he wouldn’t run into Hilary.
In the entire Novastar Competition, probably only Hilary could specifically target Jiebo.
Moreover, Hilary doesn’t even need to take any stimulants to stay awake. The moment she encounters Jiebo, she immediately enters a berserk state, refusing to rest until she has completely assimilated the oceanic essence within him.
When everyone thought Jiebo would soar to new heights, wearing the crown, he met his perfect counter.
One could only say… fate was playing a cruel joke on Jiebo.
“Jiebo and Carvelyn aren’t in the same group, so he will never face Carvelyn. Plus, now that he has lost, the chance of meeting Carvelyn becomes even more unlikely.”
Angel paused before continuing, “As for your question about the match time between the Demon Gourmet and Divine Dress Maiden, it has already started and has been going on for a good half hour. You probably won’t make it if you want to probe his background. I estimate the result will be out soon.”
Just as Angel’s words fell, he noticed a new message appear on his communicator.
