Chapter 1012 The Signs of Tribulation

Toby’s actions not only scared the Moon Bellflower Fairy out of her wits, but also gave Angel quite a startle.

“Toby, what are you doing? Birds and flower fairies have no future together!”

Angel was on the verge of blurting out these words. Moon Bellflower Fairies are asexual creatures, so even if Toby wanted to have his way, there seemed to be no viable route.

As Angel watched in shock, Toby abruptly released the Moon Bellflower Fairy, whose face wore the look of someone who had just been wronged. He then gleefully gazed at the bubble skirt that had fallen to the ground.

The Moon Bellflower Fairy was wearing a bubble skirt, an attire that shared striking resemblances with the floating soap bubbles around the manor.

The Moon Bellflower Fairy whimpered softly while Toby let out a triumphant chirp, “This skirt doesn’t look good on you, it doesn’t suit you. Change into something else.”

Despite his words, Angel had noticed that during meal times, Toby’s gaze would often linger on the bubble skirt. He clearly wasn’t as repulsed by it as he claimed to be.

“Something’s definitely not right.” Toby had never treated the Moon Bellflower Fairy with such rudeness before. He tore apart the skirt of his good friend, a move that totally contradicted Toby’s usual refined manner.

In the subsequent dreamscape, Angel witnessed a series of Toby’s unusual behaviors.

For instance, upon seeing Leon practicing his sword skills by the sea, Toby approached and offered to spar with him. As soon as Leon agreed, Toby beat him into a state where his head was littered with lumps.

Additionally, Toby ran to the tea plantation and wrecked the structures of the Kulakuka tribe, forbidding them from building villages within the manor.

Toby’s misdeeds in the dream were too numerous to list. Although he hadn’t caused any fatalities, this behavior was a complete departure from the Toby that Angel knew.

Suddenly, Toby flew to a place that caused Angel to furrow his brow in worry.

The underground Ice Chamber.

Jon’s body was lying peacefully in the Ice Coffin, and Toby circled above it twice.

Just when Angel thought Toby was about to do something to Jon, Toby merely let out an indignant chirp, “You’re the one I dislike the most!”

With a cold huff, Toby then flew out of the underground Ice Chamber.

With a head full of questions, Angel observed that Toby and Jon weren’t particularly close. Moreover, Jon had remained in his ice coffin, never awakening, so what was it that Toby despised about him?

After Toby had committed yet another series of malicious acts, a voice suddenly echoed from behind.

“Toby.” It was clear and refreshing, like the wind beneath the sun, or waves dancing in a lively stream. Instantly, it swept away Toby’s dark mood. Even the somewhat dimly lit mansion suddenly seemed to burst into vibrant colors.

Turning around in delight, Toby faced the source of the voice.

Angel saw a reflection of himself — his own image in Toby’s dream.

‘Dream Angel’ was currently leaning against the balcony on the second floor of the mansion, smiling and beckoning Toby over. Toby immediately flew up to meet him.

Angel thought Toby was going to commit some vile act against his dream self, as before. However, this time, Toby did nothing of the sort. Instead, he joyously ran over to ‘Dream Angel’, nuzzling his small head against Angel’s cheek affectionately.

‘Dream Angel’ smiled down at Toby, who responded with an excited chattering of noises.

What Toby was chattering about… was all tattling.

The targets of his accusations included everyone he had bullied before, from head maid Mana to Ollie… all the way to Leon. The content of his accusations was all over the place, mostly fabrications. For instance, Toby claimed Leon bullied him, challenged him to a duel, even plucked one of his feathers… Toby conveniently left out the part where he turned Leon’s face into a pig’s snout.

Interestingly, Toby never ratted out Jon, perhaps because he knew, even in his dreams, that Jon laid in his ice coffin and could not be slandered with tales of black and white.

Halfway through Toby’s tattletale spree, ‘Dream Angel’ walked back into his bedroom from the balcony, started tinkering with his experimental equipment, and ignored Toby.

Instantly, Toby’s mood plummeted.

Later on, ‘Dream Angel’ seemed to leave the room. Seeing his chance, Toby brightened up and smashed all the experimental equipment to pieces. When ‘Dream Angel’ returned, Toby promptly blamed the wreckage on Ollie.

Assertively, he declared, “I saw Ollie sneak into your lab earlier, she must have done it.”

‘Dream Angel’ took it at face value and went out to reprimand Ollie. As the sound of berating echoed from outside the room, Toby joyfully pranced around in circles.

The scenes unfolding before him, all of Toby’s malicious acts in the dream, began to suggest a theory to Angel.

“Could it be that Toby is using the dream to express all his discontentment from reality?”

In the tangible world, his frequent immersion in experimentation often led Toby to feel neglected, causing him to unleash his unhappiness even in dreams by smashing the apparatus of research. His engagement and closeness with others caused Toby to feel marginalized, igniting his disdain for individuals such as Ollie and Leon.

According to this logic, Toby’s behavior toward the Moon Bellflower Fairy could possibly be due to the fact that… the Moon Bellflower Fairy’s attire was more aesthetically appealing than his own, which he disliked, and thus he shredded the other’s clothing?

Angel withdrew from Toby’s dream, which at first glance seemed girlish and princess-like but was in reality filled with repressed jealousy.

“Awake?” Sanders’ deep and magnetic voice resonated in his ear.

Angel nodded, taking a moment to survey his surroundings.

A trace of confusion flickered in his eyes. He had spent a considerable amount of time within Toby’s dream, yet now found that the Gondola seemed to still be wandering the periphery of the Gloaming Mountains. He had clearly entered the Gloaming Mountains before he fell asleep. Could it be that he had only spent a few minutes in Toby’s dream?

As Angel was caught up in his confusion, a sudden clamor sounded from the Wings of Cold Frost in the distance.

Angel looked over and saw several apprentices with panicked expressions, communicating with the Frost Moon guards who had come in response.

The two apprentices leading the pack were familiar to Angel. One was a chubby, short apprentice named “Dash”, the other a young boy sporting a rat-tail braid.

These two apprentices were the very ones who had informed him yesterday that Toby might be in the Shadowy Hills.

“What’s going on over there?” Angel asked, curiosity piqued.

Sanders glanced over, “After you entered the dream, another battle took place. This battle lasted for two hours with no small number of casualties. The fight only just ended, and when they started to tally up the numbers, they found that an apprentice was missing, causing the commotion over there.”

“Another battle took place?” Angel was taken aback. He now had some understanding as to why he was still on the outskirts of the Gloaming Mountains after emerging from the dream.

When it came to the previous battle, Canter, sitting opposite, seemed to have a thousand woes. He chattered incessantly for a good while.

It was only then that Angel learned that in the previous battle, they had encountered a Blazing Gargoyle. But that wasn’t the end of it. Following that, a Great Demon who produced gargoyles appeared.

This was a tough battle. Even Canter was injured. Not only did Canter have to deal with the Great Demon, but he also had to clear the nearby monsters from the Gondola, all because Sanders was still guarding him in his dream-induced state.

After hearing all this, Angel couldn’t help but feel a bit awkward.

“The art of battle is inherently a game of chance, irrespective of you,” Sanders deftly glosses over the recent harrowing battle, steering the conversation back on track. “What’s the situation? Did you encounter any problems in Toby’s dreamscape?”

“It’s a bit ambiguous, but I suspect there might be a hiccup.”

If Toby were human, the dream wouldn’t be an issue. Humans are inherently intricate creatures, teetering on the edge between likes and dislikes. There’s a gray no man’s land cushioning the black and white.

Just like how Angel revered Jon, but within the vaults of his early memories, there are instances of dissatisfaction towards Jon.

While the emotions manifested externally are always positive, if resentment lies hidden within the subconscious, it could be unleashed during dreams. Hence, even the kindest person could experience dreams of reckless abandon.

But Toby is different. Angel had entered Toby’s dreams in the past. Back then, he found himself in a dreamscape where Toby was rolling about in a pile of dried fish permeated with a salty tang, and later spotting Angel, rushing over to show affection.

Unlike humans, Toby’s feelings are straightforward — love is love, and hatred is hatred.

Therefore, when it conjured a dream so “intricate”, bordering on Machiavellian, filled with jealousy and brazenness, Angel felt something might be amiss.

After listening to Angel’s narration, Sanders pondered for a moment. “The emotional domain field of the massive serpent might have amplified some negative emotions within Toby that it had not noticed, culminating in its dreamscape.”

In simpler terms, the emotional domain field pried open a gateway to some of Toby’s suppressed emotions, gradually setting them free.

For humans, this could be a golden opportunity for introspection and confronting one’s true self.

However, for Toby, this is not good news.

Because Toby is subject to the Tribulation of the Five Flavors. Once the suppressed emotions find a channel for release, even if it’s just a pinhole, it could trigger a flood of cataclysmic proportions.

Moreover, the Tribulation of the Five Flavors concerns Toby’s existence and destiny.

“Judging by the light breeze and drizzle in its dream, while the Tribulation of the Five Flavors has yet to fully commence, signs of it are appearing.” Sanders tapped the tabletop subconsciously. Toby had already endured the “Rage”. It was left with four more — Love, Hatred, Resentment, and Grief.

From the jealousy and possessiveness displayed in its dream, there’s a high chance that Toby is grappling with the “Resentment Tribulation”.

The rage had barely subsided, and resentment was already knocking at the door.

Right now, Angel felt like he was caught in a whirlpool of emotions. These past few days, it seemed like bad news had taken a liking to his doorstep, hitting him with wave after wave of trouble.

“Given the current circumstances, there should be no immediate issues.” Sanders reassuringly patted Angel’s shoulder, providing comfort.

Angel nodded, choosing to remain silent.

Suddenly, a thought crossed his mind. There were peculiarities in Toby’s dream that he hadn’t previously considered. For example, why was Pat Manor positioned atop an island? Why was the environment suffused with colorful bubbles?

He could interpret the first anomaly as such: an island, marooned at sea, might represent Toby’s sense of belonging towards Pat Manor, deeming it his safe haven.

The colorful bubbles, on the other hand, could symbolize Toby’s inner impression of Pat Manor as an ethereal, dream-like place.

However, there was one detail that Angel couldn’t help but dwell on.

“I’ve noticed that in Toby’s dream, he often consumes crabs with sea anemones on their backs instead of dried small fish. Could this be hinting at something?” he pondered.
