Angel’s words made Isabelle think of her mentor.
Karafi was known as “Soul Deathflame”. Her demeanor matched her title — cold to people and brutal in her actions. However, someone with such a demeanor was exceptionally gentle to souls.
Setting souls free was something Karafi frequently did.
“People suffer in chains in their lives. At least after death, their souls can be granted freedom.” Karafi often repeated this sentiment, which somewhat resonated with what Angel said today.
Angel calmly stated, “I don’t know what kind of person Lady Karafi was, but my attitude towards a soul is not based on whether it is a soul, but on who the soul belongs to.”
Isabelle nodded, seeing from this perspective, Angel seemed more rational and aligned with her views — looking at it from the heart. While Karafi treated all souls equally.
“At least on this point, you resemble my mentor,” Isabelle paused, “For this reason alone, how could I refuse?”
Isabelle readily agreed to Angel’s request.
Angel smiled, knowing Isabelle would consent was within his expectations. After all, if Sparrow Blossom chose to stay in Black Castle, Isabelle wouldn’t lose anything. It was evident from the way Isabelle let Sparrow Blossom freely interact with Natasha.
Angel also learned about Isabelle’s attitude towards Sparrow Blossom from the latter, but he still made this request, hoping for an added assurance.
Human nature is complex, and it’s hard to generalize. No one knew if Isabelle’s current gentleness towards Sparrow Blossom was genuine or just for show.
So, Angel made this request.
Again, using the Prelude of Reincarnation didn’t exhaust much from him. In fact, he could gain additional experimental data, so he didn’t really lose out.
After Isabelle nodded, it was time for Angel to make his promise.
Isabelle stepped down from the ceremonial platform and signaled to Angel that he could begin.
Angel looked at Moriah, took out the Prelude of Reincarnation, and raised his gun.
Moriah, who had been in deep slumber, seemed to sense some external disturbances. Her tightly closed eyes slowly opened.
Her eye sockets were devoid of whites and pupils, filled only with a pitch-black void. This kind of blackness resembled a terrifying and profound vortex, as if it could swallow everything, including light.
As Moriah opened her eyes, a strange rhythm began to emanate from within her.
This rhythm disturbed the smoky coffin that enveloped her, suggesting that Moriah wasn’t willing to be confined.
Angel didn’t want Moriah to break free and cause further complications. Without hesitation, he pulled the trigger. A white light bullet shot out from the muzzle, aiming straight for Moriah’s forehead.
After letting out a heartbreaking scream, Moriah’s expression changed from calm to ferocious, then finally returned to calmness. At the same time, her face began to show faint signs of a ghostly appearance.
Isabelle watched the scene intently. Even though she had previously witnessed Mandara’s transformation, seeing the effects of the Prelude of Reincarnation again still astonished her.
As the half-ghost form began to emerge, Angel could clearly feel the chaotic energy within Moriah’s soul rapidly decreasing.
However, compared to the initial transformation of Tulas and the subsequent transformation of Mandara, Moriah’s transformation was much slower.
But when compared to the ordinary ghosts Angel had dealt with before, Moriah’s transformation speed was much faster.
Seeing this, Angel’s eyes sparkled, and he had an inkling of judgment in his heart.
By the time Moriah had fully transformed into a half-ghost, Angel fired the second shot…
And after the sixth shot, Moriah’s eyes closed, and amidst the chaotic energy plummeting, she fell into a deep unconsciousness.
The entire process took Angel about three hours.
Judging from this, Moriah’s transformation speed is truly not as fast as Tulas and Mandara. Although Angel doesn’t have much data on the experiments of the Prelude of Reincarnation, from the current situation, he has basically inferred that the “speed of transformation” is determined by two prerequisites: the essence of the soul and the total amount of soul power.
For a special soul, the transformation speed is almost instantaneous. Angel could even fire six consecutive shots without hesitation.
However, for ordinary souls, Angel had to rest after each shot, waiting for the transformed to be ready for the next shot.
Thus, the essence of the soul determines the speed of transformation.
And the total soul power is also a factor. Initially, when Angel transformed ordinary souls, it took “days” to complete.
Moriah only took three hours, which is considered extremely fast. Since Moriah herself is not a special soul, the conclusion is pretty clear that the total soul power is also a factor to consider.
Half an hour after Moriah fell unconscious, she opened her eyes.
At that moment, the darkness in her eyes was no longer present, and they reverted to the appearance of a normal soul. The previously cold and gloomy expression on her face had now become lively, especially when Moriah saw Isabelle. The joy that erupted from the depths of her eyes was unmistakable.
Observing the silent exchange between the two, Angel, with a sense of self-awareness, bid them farewell.
Now that Moriah had returned to her soul form, Isabelle surely had much to discuss with her. Angel’s presence would only be a disturbance. Besides, Angel had also obtained new data regarding the Prelude of Reincarnation and needed some time to process it.
Regarding the matter of the Infant Spirits, since the bullets were missing from the Prelude of Reincarnation, it would have to wait for another time.
Angel exited the central wizard tower of the Sacred Mountain. As he walked along the long corridor towards the cliffside entrance, he was greeted by the High Priest Baya waiting outside.
Behind the High Priest, Angel saw a group of priests clad in white robes, their eyes filled with a mixture of curiosity and excitement as they looked at him.
“Sir, it has been a long time since you visited. Would you like to sit in the Centennial Hall?” the High Priest Baya inquired.
Upon the High Priest’s invitation, the priests behind him showed a look of anticipation. Some of them were familiar to Angel, including friends and relatives of the Kulakuka tribe who had left with him.
For them, scattered tribes like Babaya and others were matters of great concern. Seeing Angel now, even if they couldn’t witness the tribes themselves, gaining knowledge from him would bring them comfort.
With that in mind, Angel nodded in agreement to the High Priest’s invitation, “Alright.”
…
By the time he left the Centennial Hall, several hours had passed.
Amid the entourage of the priests and flying pig knights, Angel approached the altar and then returned to the Inner World.
Upon arriving in the Black Forest, Angel immediately sensed something unusual. The skies over Black Castle were perennially gloomy, filled with lightning dancing amongst them.
However, during this visit, Angel noticed a faint glimmer.
The Black Clouds persisted, but they seemed less dense than usual. The lightning had disappeared, and amidst these conditions, a glint of light pierced through the thinning clouds, showering down.
Though the light remained dim, even more so than the overcast skies of the Outer World, this level of brightness was exceptionally rare in Black Castle, which was usually engulfed in darkness.
“This recent upheaval with the ghosts might provide Black Castle an opportunity for transformation,” Angel mused, staring at the faint glimmer, “Perhaps this is a sign of its effect?”
Lost in thought, Angel headed towards the area where the ghosts were converging.
After most of the day, Angel managed to gather six white light bullets. After multiple purgings and banishments, the number of ghosts in Black Castle had noticeably diminished. On his journey to the teleportation node, Angel encountered fewer than a hundred ghosts.
However, this was limited to the vicinity of Black Castle. Further away, in the Black and Corpse Forest beneath the castle, a large number of ghosts still lingered.
Upon returning to the Soul Domain, Angel intended to organize his experimental records on the Prelude of Reincarnation. But as he walked through the long corridor to his temporary residence, he saw the door being pushed open, with Sanders emerging from within.
“Mentor?”
“You’ve arrived just in time,” replied Sanders, “I’ve already received a message from Gloria. She and Felicia have left the Ice Cavern.”
Now, Sanders was planning to visit the Ice Cavern.
Upon hearing the news, Angel’s eyes lit up with excitement. He had come to Black Castle for two main reasons: one was to fulfill his promise to Popoca, and the other was to meet Gloria.
When he learned that Gloria had emerged, Angel decided to accompany her to the Ice Cavern.
Angel was very familiar with the route to the Ice Cavern. He and Shadow had spent a long time there in the past, where he practiced his alchemy.
They journeyed down from the Soul Domain, passed through the underground third layer known as the Land of Soul Hunting, the underground fourth layer which was the Insect Nest, and finally reached the Ice Cavern.
Before even stepping into the Ice Cavern, Angel noticed that many apprentices from Black Castle had gathered nearby. To his surprise, he even spotted Natasha among them.
Seeing Angel’s confusion, Sanders explained, “You were in the Living Soul Garden and might not know that an omen occurred at Black Castle recently…”
Not long ago, a beam of light, resembling a towering spear, broke through the shackles of space, rising from the ground and piercing the clouds.
This beam of light disturbed the clouds, creating ripples as if stirring a pool of water.
The lightning snakes that used to roam within the dense, black clouds suddenly disappeared, and even the thick clouds themselves began to thin out considerably.
The source of this light omen originated from the Ice Cavern, which is why many curious apprentices had gathered nearby.
Upon hearing Sanders’ explanation, Angel had a sudden realization. No wonder he felt the black clouds were thinner with a faint glow sprinkling down when he returned to Black Castle earlier. It must have been due to this anomaly.
As for the faint glow that penetrated the Black Clouds, whether it was sunlight or the beam that entered the cloud layer, it was hard to say.
“It seems,” Sanders remarked, looking at the entrance of the Ice Cavern not far away, “that the ‘feast’ Gloria and Felicia are preparing is already taking shape. Let’s go and take a look inside.”
