The words of Sanders served as a wake-up call for them.
The prior threat from the followers of the Bud indirectly indicated that Rosen had already caught their attention. Yet, how could they be certain that the Arrow of the Vanquished would assuredly target Rosen?
There are primarily two reasons that come to mind.
The first reason lies in the mysterious property of the Arrow of the Vanquished. Their current understanding of this arrow is merely a vague concept. It’s possible that the Arrow of the Vanquished can disregard all external factors, pinpoint Rosen with utmost precision, and strike him from a great distance. After all, Mysterious Objects defy conventional logic, and anything could potentially happen.
The second reason is that there might be a follower of the Bud present in Sky Mechanical City who has identified Rosen’s identity and location. This informant could have directly contacted the archer, leading to the current predicament.
Both reasons seem plausible. However, the first reason is hard to gauge, which is why Muse leans towards——or rather, hopes, for the second reason to be the more probable one.
From the Bud follower who threatened Rosen, it’s evident that the Bud possesses a means of secretive communication that spans vast distances, perhaps even crossing dimensional and spacetime boundaries. This would explain how Rosen’s actions in banishing them from the void were immediately known to the Bud.
Given this premise, as soon as the adversary arrived in Sky Mechanical City and confirmed Rosen’s identity, they could have initiated a remote communication and executed their assault.
Furthermore, only the second reason provides them with any tangible clues, granting them a chance for further Investigation.
With these thoughts, Muse nodded in gratitude to Sanders for his timely insight. She then turned to Antonio, instructing, “Using the Magic Eye, monitor all outsiders who arrived in Sky Mechanical City yesterday and today. Perhaps among them is the very instigator we’re searching for.”
After Muse finished speaking, Gloria suddenly remarked, “It’s entirely possible that the devotees of ‘the Bud’ have collaborated from both inside and out, allowing them to precisely target Lord Rosen. However, how can Director Muse be so sure that the informant for ‘the Bud’ sect is someone who recently arrived in Sky Mechanical City? It’s possible that this devotee of ‘the Bud’, lurking in the shadows, has been lying low in Sky Mechanical City for a long time.”
Before Muse could respond to Gloria’s point, Angel quickly refuted it.
“If the information about Lord Rosen was truly disseminated through inside-outside collaboration, then the person relaying this information could not have been hiding for a long time. They must have arrived in the last few days,” Angel stated with great conviction.
“How can you be so certain?” Gloria inquired, her face etched with doubt.
Instead of looking at Gloria, Angel’s gaze settled on the head of Rosen, explaining, “It’s a simple principle: if they had been undercover in Sky Mechanical City for a long time, they would undoubtedly possess more detailed intel, especially about Lord Rosen.”
Though Angel didn’t spell it out explicitly, Gloria, staring at Rosen’s slightly eerie open-eyed head, quickly grasped his implication.
If they had been undercover for a long while, they would definitely be aware that a significant part of Rosen’s body is mechanically constructed. With such knowledge, the target of the ‘Arrow of the Vanquished’ would surely have been Rosen’s head, not his heart.
The fact that Rosen is still alive speaks volumes; the enemy clearly doesn’t know much about Rosen, suggesting they must have arrived in Sky Mechanical City very recently.
Gloria no longer voiced her doubts, apparently concurring with Angel’s perspective.
At this point, Angel turned to Antonio, instructing, “You should investigate those who have recently arrived in Sky Mechanical City and have inquired about Lord Rosen. Also, keep a close watch on a particular individual.”
Antonio asked, “To whom are you referring, Lord Pat?”
“Silkvine!” Angel replied succinctly.
The followers of the Bud are known for settling scores no matter how trivial. Rosen is one focal point of their attention, while Silkvine is surely another. After dealing with Rosen, they might very well shift their target back to Silkvine. Hence, investigating around Silkvine might yield some clues.
Muse nodded in agreement. “Angel is right. The intel that the Bud currently has centers around Rosen, and the other revolves around Silkvine. Antonio, dispatch the Magic Eye immediately to monitor around Silkvine and her friends, and see if anyone has recently arrived at Sky Mechanical City.”
As Muse’s words trailed off, Antonio nodded in understanding. A faint blue luminance transformed into numerous specks of light and vanished from the secret chamber.
After Antonio’s departure, Muse nodded at Angel, “I owe you for this. Once this situation cools down, visit Enchanted Mechanical City. I have something for you.”
Though Muse didn’t explicitly state, it was apparent he intended to compensate or perhaps offer a token of gratitude to Angel.
Angel replied, “I had plans to return to the Savage Grottoes today, so our conversation will have to wait.”
Muse was taken aback, probably not anticipating Angel’s swift departure. After a brief contemplation, he said, “With the Bud’s presence, Sky Mechanical City is unlikely to find peace anytime soon. Perhaps it’s best you leave now.”
After a pause, Muse retrieved a silver cog-shaped button from his steam-powered robe.
Muse caressed the serrated edges of the cog, and it began to radiate a faint glow. The space around the cog button seemed to ripple like water. The previously visible mini signal tower got enveloped by these ripples and gradually faded from sight.
Then, weighing the cog button, which hadn’t become any heavier, Muse, with a casual flick of his wrist, tossed the button to Angel.
“The mini signal tower is inside it. Consider it a gift.” Muse tried to seem nonchalant, but a twitch in the corner of his eye betrayed his inner feelings about parting with such a valuable item.
Angel caught a glimpse of Muse’s distress and chuckled inwardly, handing back the gear-shaped button: “There’s no need for this. My aiding Lord Rosen was simply a matter of being at the right place at the right time. Moreover, I was the one who informed Lord Rosen about the matter of the Bud. So, I am intrinsically linked to the situation as well.”
Although Muse felt a pang of sympathy, he waved his hand dismissively, “Take it. Giving you the signal tower isn’t merely a gesture of gratitude. As you’ve mentioned, you’re deeply involved in this matter, so I need to be able to contact you swiftly through this signal tower.”
“Furthermore, the issue of the Bud isn’t just a concern for Sky Mechanical City but pertains to the entire Wizarding World. Hence, by giving you the signal tower, my intention is that, should there be any intelligence, you might assist in establishing contact with the esteemed Rhine Mute.”
After finishing, Muse muttered under his breath, “Why doesn’t your Savage Grottoes install signal towers or set up teleportation formations?”
Angel: “…”
Angel actually wanted to say that if Director Muse truly wished to get in touch with him, he could approach his elder brother, Leon, at the Bliss Pavilion, as Leon has the capability to enter the Wilderness of Dreams.
But after some thought, Angel refrained from mentioning this, understanding that pushing Leon into the spotlight wouldn’t be advantageous.
“If my research bears fruit, I’ll return this signal tower to you,” said Angel.
Muse paused for a moment, realizing that Angel’s reference to his research likely pertained to studies on long-distance information exchange. Nodding in agreement, Muse responded, “Alright, the display case at the Research Institute is always open to house your achievements.”
