Chapter 3 Search the Corpse!

Chapter 2 Zombie Potion <TOC> Chapter 4 A Crazy Plan

Translator: SumTLMan

About a quarter of an hour had passed since the assassination attempt had begun.

The estate overhead was probably already overflowing with a river of blood. Still, in the sewers below in comparison, it was relatively peaceful, apart from the gurgling sounds coming from the flowing sewage and the few occasional squeaks from scurrying rats.

……

“Demon Weasel Bandits” are all professional assassins with most of their assassinations ending silently.

But this time, unexpectedly, an accident occurred.

“Boom!”

Suddenly, a violent explosion sounded.

Fire exploded throughout the floor, and a wave of air poured furiously into the underground. In the confines of the sewer pipes, the commotion became increasingly deafening.

The sudden change of events caused Tyger to spring to his feet with a “whoosh” as if an old dog’s tail had been stepped on.

This old man who looked like a drunkard one second had instantly turned into a cold, dark hound, staring sharply into the depths of the pipeline.

He looked at the large hole blown through the underground pipe and muttered to himself: “Huh… Strange, how could the boss and the others have caused such a commotion… Could it be that there was some sort of accident?”

Without waiting for him to continue, the recruits all immediately stood at attention as well.

Rayne pulled out the dagger in his holster and pointed in the direction of the explosion, looking severe.

He glanced at Tyger, who had dived into the darkness, and was glad that he had done the right thing by not making any sudden moves toward escape.

At that moment, his “Wisdom Brain” suddenly gave another warning beep.

[Ding! Warning! Deadly unknown neurotoxin has been detected, direction—>… Detecting slight paralysis, you are about to fall into a coma, please inject an antidote immediately.]

[Ding! Toxin concentration continuing to rise, expected to reach a lethal concentration in 1.3 seconds, please evacuate the danger zone in time!]

1.3 seconds, not enough time to react at all.

“Not good!”

With almost no hesitation, Rayne pulled out an antidote potion as if performing a sleight of hand and then violently stabbed it into his thigh.

This was something he had secretly stashed away during his recruit training, and now it had come in handy.

At the same time, he jerked back without hesitation away from where the toxin had been detected.

He was still wearing his gas mask, but the toxin had penetrated his airway without any hindrance. How could this toxin be so deadly?

The first thing he instinctively did was to flee, not bothering to hide any of his cards!

……

“9527, what are you doing!”

On the other hand, Tyger’s pupils fiercely shrank as he watched Rayne’s sudden and hasty retreat.

He was not only stunned by this recruit’s bizarre behaviour but also marvelled at the amazing speed this guy had displayed in his hasty retreat.

[Instant Quickstep] was an essential movement skill for thieves, and everyone in the “Demon Weasel Bandits” was required to learn it. Using this skill could allow someone to burst into super-high-speed in a flash.

However, Tyger found that this recruit’s breakout speed was much higher than he remembered.

This was definitely not a feat that an ordinary recruit was capable of performing!

He had personally taught this batch of recruits. This 9527, who he remembered as having mediocre qualifications, had a maximum burst speed of 11 or 12 metres per second during the “Quickstep” test, which was just at the level of passing.

But at this moment he actually surpassed his previous record with a super high breakout speed of nearly 15m/s!

This level… though not as fast as an “Awakened”, was by far quicker than any other recruit in his class!

And the other two recruits were also equally as shocked… How could a guy who was clearly the “Crane Tail” in training and examinations suddenly become so fierce?

The two recruits also wondered: Is that guy trying to seize the opportunity from the explosion to escape?

…….

“I can’t believe he’s so skilled… Could it be that kid was acting clumsy on a regular basis to hide his true ability?”

Tyger instantly understood what was going on, he had misread the situation!

He’s afraid this recruit who spoke few words probably hid the most cards among the group.

Although he was surprised, at the same time, he sneered: Even so, it’s impossible to escape from daddy’s clutches!

But a moment later, a flash of doubt passed through Tyger’s mind: “All of the recruits carry standard supplies, where did he get that potion from? Does he have some kind of storage space?”

“It looked like an antidote potion provided by the training base, but when did that guy stash one away…?”

Reality didn’t allow him more time to ponder further.

Suddenly, a sense of crisis had hit Tyger’s mind.

The experienced man’s old face changed drastically as he immediately realised what was going on.

Unfortunately, it was already too late.

By the time Tyger had realised what was happening, he watched a staggering figure scurry through the blast hole and into the sewers. He saw the man trying to escape, but he himself was overwhelmed by a strong wave of vertigo.

It took him another moment to realise that it was deadly poison gas!

The toxin spread so quickly that the horrified expression in Tyger’s eyes didn’t even fully stretch across his face before his body collapsed helplessly to the ground, accompanied by a low thud.

The other two recruits didn’t even have a chance to react, rolling their eyes and dying instantly.

……

“What the hell is happening, did someone really escape down the sewers?!”

On the other end, Rayne sprinted the whole way to avoid the wave of toxic gas while feeling incredulous in his mind.

He didn’t think that this assassination attempt by the “Demon Weasel Bandits” would actually go so awry.

He looked at the figure that was in hot pursuit behind him and his heart stuttered.

Obviously, it wasn’t Tyger, nor was it the other two recruits… Just now, the horrible toxin had spread rapidly with the blast of air, and those three guys hadn’t had time to react at all, so they must’ve turned into cold bodies by now.

“Is this comer a transcendent? Or maybe they’re seriously injured…”

After running a few hundred metres, Rayne suddenly felt something amiss.

How hadn’t this guy actually caught up to him yet?

Then, without any more time for thought, the staggering man behind him actually collapsed to the ground with a crash, prostrating himself in the sewage.

“Is he dead?”

Rayne froze when seeing this scene.

He stopped in his tracks and clutched the dagger in his hand.

Thoughts instantly flashed through his mind: If the other guy was a transcendent, it would be easy to kill me, there was no need to go through such tedious steps to lure me over. But if this guy wasn’t a transcendent, he wouldn’t have been able to escape from the mob of assassins above and go into the sewers.

The only possibility was that this guy had indeed succumbed to his serious injuries.

This guy… Who the hell is this guy anyway?

After weighing his options for just a split second, Rayne chose to take a closer look.

The concentration of poisonous fog around him showed that it was within safe limits as he cautiously moved towards the fallen man.

The fallen man’s mouth and nose were half-submerged in sewage, clearly showing that he was deceased.

He saw a large trail of blood coming from the back of this man’s body and a black lustrous dagger hilt sticking out.

Clearly, this was the cause of the fatal wound.

“This is… Boss Quinn’s enchanted dagger [Black Ridge Wolf Fang]?”

Rayne instantly recognised the glistening black dagger hilt with the horrible three-pronged bloody groove stuck in the back of the corpse.

This weapon is Quinn’s exclusive extraordinary weapon, the boss of the “Demon Weasel Bandits”.

That also meant that this blade was the one that Boss Quinn had personally used to kill him!

“How had he managed to escape under Quinn, who had unlocked the third-order genetic lock? Who the hell is this guy…?”

Rayne had seen how mighty Boss Quinn was, an ordinary second-order transcendent wouldn’t have been able to survive a single strike.

If he could escape, this meant that this guy wasn’t simple and had some skills.

With doubt, Rayne turned his head sideways to look at the corpse’s face, but when he got a good look at the bearded face, his pupils shrank sharply in disbelief.

“Isn’t that the target of this assassination mission, Baron Maureen?”

He was familiar with this face; the picture of the target had been memorised by everyone in the “Demon Weasel Bandits” long before this operation began.

Rayne’s heart pounded out of his chest after seeing the body right in front of him.

Infiltrating a large territory to kill an Imperial nobleman went against the grain of what a band of bandits was supposed to do.

“If the upper echelons of the Demon Weasel Bandits were willing to take such a significant risk this time, it meant that this Baron Maureen definitely had a big secret!

The poisonous gas coming from the explosion tunnel was still thick, so it would probably take some time for the people above to think about coming down.

Rayne glanced at the opening caused by the explosion not far away, and the first thing that flashed through his mind was a crazy thought.

“Search the corpse!”

Although his eyes were somewhat greedy for the sharp dagger [Black Ridge Wolf Fang] sticking out from the corpse, he didn’t dare touch it, but instead carefully searched Baron Maureen’s corpse.
