Chapter 4 A Crazy Plan

Chapter 3 Search the Corpse! <TOC> Chapter 5 The Greedy Pythius

Translator: SumTLMan

Rayne had been trained in professional [Steal] skills at the base, and it only took two or three seconds to search the entire corpse.

A moment later, however, he frowned disappointedly and murmured: “This can’t be… Why doesn’t this guy have anything of value?”

Apart from a pure gold pocket watch, Rayne had found nothing else of value on his body.

But in that instance, as he turned his eyes, he saw a blackened storage ring out of the corner of his eyes on the ring finger of the corpse’s left hand and was again jubilant.

This guy actually has… a spatial storage ring!

This kind of spatial equipment had a market but no price in this world and was a storage treasure exclusive to nobles and high-ranking transcendents.

To have such a thing meant that the ring contained treasures of immeasurable value!

Without any hesitation, Rayne searched the black ring, as if he had clicked on a computer folder in his previous life, a vast array of dazzling items was revealed before him.

The storage space, which was about a cubic metre or so, stored a large number of precious metal coins, gold crowns, silver nairns, and large denomination banknotes issued by the Omagh Imperial Bank.

Then there were some books about the transcendent doctor’s profession, some odd materials and rows of potions…

This is a fortune that would make anyone’s eyes water with envy!

……

“I’m rich!”

After Rayne saw so many dazzling items in the storage ring, he immediately realized that this was his “Big Chance”.

But in an instant, thoughts were racing through his head again.

This guy escaped below, so the group of “Demon Weasel Bandits” above must still be alive. Once they come down to see the situation, they’re bound to track down the body, and even if he ran away with the loot, the chances of escaping from Quinn, who has unlocked the third-order genetic lock, tracking him down are extremely low! And now with Tyger dead and the [Zombie Potion] toxin still inside of him… Running away now isn’t the best option until he can find a cure.

After a moment’s thought, Rayne realized that this wasn’t the best time to escape.

In the same instance, an even crazier plan flashed through his mind.

If he could pull it off, he could escape the “Demon Weasel Bandits” grasps and gain riches overnight!

“I’ll do it, I’ll seek riches and glory while navigating dangers!”

After a moment of weighing his options, his eyes lit up, and he acted without hesitation.

Rayne didn’t even bother counting the contents of the storage ring, not even touching the ring, but instead opted to store all of the items into his personal folded space carried by his “Wisdom Brain”.

This left the storage ring on Baron Maureen’s body completely intact!

The sewers were still flooded with raw sewage, leaving few, if any traces of evidence of what truly happened.

Tracing and counter-tracing were part of the trainee assassin training course, so he simply dealt with it and returned the way he had come.

Although there were still a few minor flaws, Rayne was sure that the senior management of the “Demon Weasel Bandits” wouldn’t suspect him any time soon, even if they did find something suspicious.

After all, to catch a thief requires dirt!

No one would’ve imagined that he had used a folding space carried by his “Wisdom Brain”, the forefront of technology of the 21st century, for hiding the loot without a trace!

The fact that there is no loot on his person gives him plenty of room for sophistry and others’ imagination.

……

After having done all this, Rayne immediately returned to the previous sewer junction.

When he looked again, Captain Tyger and the other two recruits had indeed been killed off by the poison gas.

The concentration of poison gas around them had dropped considerably due to air circulation, but it was still in the range of being deadly.

In his mind, his “Wisdom Brain” kept sounding danger alerts.

This poison gas can easily kill a transcendent… This toxicity is truly intense…

Rayne didn’t dare to be careless.

With his “Wisdom Brain’s” poison concentration alerts, he carefully chose an upwind opening a little further away from Tyger’s corpse to avoid being killed by the poison gas.

Then he suddenly inhaled two puffs of the poisonous gas, enough to render him unconscious, but not fatal enough to kill.

In a flash, the pungent smell of what seemed like ammonia filled his airways and he immediately blacked out and became completely unconscious.

There’s a good chance of being caught while escaping now, so… The safest place is the most dangerous!

That’s right, he was going to pretend to be poisoned, then fish in troubled waters and return to the base for the cure to [Zombie Potion]!

……

After an unknown amount of time passed, his consciousness gradually returned.

Vaguely, Rayne heard someone talking with his ears.

“Haven’t those things been found yet?”

“No…”

“Boss Quinn, Baron Maureen’s storage ring is empty. Either that guy hid it somewhere else before he escaped into the sewers, or someone took it after he died…”

“If someone took away those things, why didn’t they just take the whole storage ring? The most likely possibility is that Maureen had a backup plan and hid his treasure before he escaped into the sewers…”

“I didn’t expect that guy to have a hidden gas bomb up his sleeve either. That move made so much noise that it attracted the city guards of ‘Blazing Steel Fortress’ and forced us to evacuate in a hurry. If it’s still on the estate, it’s highly likely that it’s ended up in the hands of Marquis Barrett. If that’s the case, we’re in deep trouble…”

“However, there were some suspicious traces found in the sewers, and I don’t know what to make of it…”

“That’s what I’m wondering about too. Those marks, they don’t look like it came from any sewer rats. Unfortunately, Tyger is dead, and the only person still alive in the sewers is the unconscious recruit who inhaled the poison gas, and no one else knows what happened. Besides, I’ve already searched a few people myself and searched the surrounding neighbourhoods, I saw no sign of anything hidden…”

“Let’s wait for 9527 to wake up and properly ask him…”

“Ah… We’re in trouble now, that lord used his secret agents in ‘Blazing Steel Fortress’ to get us in. Now that we don’t have the goods, how can we deliver it…”

……

Rayne looked at his “Wisdom Brain’s” time prompt and saw that he had been unconscious for three days.

A quick glance at his surroundings confirmed that he was now back at the “Demon Weasel Bandit’s” base camp.

“The medical lab at the base! Sure enough, I’m back here…”

This was to be expected, and Rayne lay back on the medical bed, looking around at the enclosed chamber with a sense of relief.

As expected, it wasn’t long after Rayne had come to his senses that Boss Quinn and several of the bandit group’s senior members came over to question him.

After all, he was the only survivor in the sewers, and everyone wanted to know what had happened to Baron Maureen after he had escaped into the sewers.

Unfortunately, Rayne’s answer was, naturally, that he didn’t know anything.

He said that he had begun choking after inhaling a mouthful of poison gas and passed out.

To the casual observer, his story was flawless.

The fact that he happened to be upwind on the edge of the passage opening during the poison gas explosion was the only plausible explanation for 9527’s survival.

After all, it could only have been due to pure luck that a recruit survived when Tyger, an “Awakened” who had unlocked the first-order genetic lock, had died.

Under normal circumstances, Rayne would’ve been killed by the poison gas in the sewers before he could react, just like Tyger and the other two recruits, if he hadn’t been alerted by his “Wisdom Brain”.

Moreover, who would’ve imagined that after stealing the contents of the storage ring, he would’ve had the audacity to return in range of the poison gas and knock himself out.

……

Next, Rayne is here to get the cure for the [Zombie Potion] in his body!
